Indio, California. Indio began as an Indian Village with Native Americans finding palm oases along the San Andreas Fault zone in the Indio Hills and the Whitewater River flowing through the Valley to ancient lakes attractive settlement locations. Indio incorporated as a city in 1930 becoming the Valley’s first city and at the time had a population of 1,875. 

In addition to beginning as a railroad town, tourism played a roll in Indio’s formation and growth.  In 1901, the Riverside Press newspaper reported amusements included ‘tennis, croquet, baseball, mountain climbing, and tramps along the desert”.  In 1903, a tennis health camp opened near the Indio railroad depot to take advantage of the much publicized health benefits from Valley’s climate.

Today, the City of Indio makes a point to provide involvement with their citizens that allows town and residents to work together. The area strongly promotes its cultural and ethnic diversity, cares for its children and their future, seeks development to create local jobs and a vibrant economy, and provides quality services.
